Afghanistan International Bank wins Best Bank in Afghanistan Award

AIB wins 2020 Banking award from Euromoney on first year of application

Kabul – 22/07/23

Afghanistan International Bank (“AIB”) is delighted to have won the 2020 award for best bank in Afghanistan from Euromoney, the respected global publisher for the finance industry. It is the first year that AIB has entered the award contest.

Commenting on the award, the Euromoney judges noted:

  • • “2019 saw AIB unveil a full-service digital banking platform, the first of its kind in Afghanistan. It allows customers to view and manage loans and accounts, and process local and international transfers via their desktop or smartphone.”

  • • “AIB’s systemic importance grew in 2019, when Standard Chartered withdrew completely from the market, leaving it as the only onshore lender able to transmit dollar payments to non-central Asian states.”

  • • “Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of AIB’s rise since its formation in 2004 is its 80-strong compliance team, overseen by Deloitte. In Afghanistan, nothing puts the customer more at ease than promising to adhere to global norms and standards – then sticking to your word.”

In addition to this Euromoney award, AIB has won The Banker magazine’s award for Bank of the Year

- Afghanistan for the past eight consecutive years, and the CFI’s award for Best Corporate Governance

- Afghanistan for the past seven consecutive years.

Anthony Barned, CEO of AIB, said:

“We feel honoured to have won this award, which highlighted not only our absolute focus on compliance, but also our progressive approach to delivering modern, world-class banking services to Afghanistan. We are very proud of the systemic role we play in the country’s financial infrastructure, so we are grateful for this recognition of our essential work. I would like to thank all of my colleagues who continue to make the bank such a brilliant institution, and a beacon of governance in the region.”
